Packs for Prosperity
This is the beginning of the gift giving season, and my focus this week is on collecting, filling, and distributing back packs to teen boys who live in a local group home.
Most of these boys do not have families to celebrate with this holiday and I would like to add a little bit of joy to their lives with a few nice gifts to show them that this community cares about them.
I am collecting backpacks for teens, gift cards, snacks, cool socks!, small games, balls, rackets, t-shirts, hats, cologne, and any other items that we think a teenage boy would love to receive.

The Winter Good Karma Collection
I walked out into the rain, into the cold, into a sea of mostly men. There is a cover above part of the parking lot but it is a sun cover to protect people from the summer rays. It is not waterproof in the slightest. I look down at the ground. It is soaked and there are large puddles forming everywhere. My sleeping bag will be of little use because it will instantly get wet. I will most likely have to stand the whole night to stay dry or squat. And while I have layers of clothing on, I am starting to get cold. I was counting on that sleeping bag to stay warm. Still I will be all right. We are allowed to leave here anytime; we just can’t get back in tonight if we do.
I look around and only about half of the people around me are as well prepared as me. A few better, most worse. How are they all going to make it through the night? I’m shocked that I don’t hear about homeless deaths every morning on the news. Maybe they just aren’t newsworthy.

Don’t miss out on the annual Empty Bowls event at Mesa Community College. You can choose one of thousands of handcrafted bowls and dine on a simple meal of bread, soup and water in observance of World Hunger Day. All proceeds go directly to the nonprofit Paz de Cristo Community Center in Mesa, Arizona which provides anti-hunger and empowerment support for the East Valley’s homeless, unemployed, working poor and their families.

Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at the Southern and Dobson Campus at 1833 W. Southern Avenue, Mesa, Arizona. It is scheduled from 10:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
